Pano Logic's Pano: virtual XP or Vista in a box

Check it CIOs, Pano Logic just announced their new Pano virtualization device. According to the fiesty startup, their new XP and Vista virtualization solution can cut your Total Cost of Ownership by 70% for a promised savings of $3,200 per desktop over three years. Of course, you have to make the initial investment of $20 per month per device (one per user) with perpetual licenses available. The Pano device has no CPU, memory, operating system or drivers -- at least not in the way those items are typically perceived by your IT staff. A "Pano Logic chip" manages the virtualization. In other words: no client-side malware or hiccups for fewer deskside visits -- everything is managed centrally from your VMWare Server installation. The device does pack the required jacks for a VGA display (up to 1600 x 1200 pixels supported), USB keyboard and Mouse (3x total USB), 10/100Mbps Ethernet, and a pair of mini-jacks for audio in/out. Of course, the system is entirely dependent upon lickity quick, uncongested pipes so if you're sporting a latency above 5-ms, you can forget about Pano's virtualization. Check out the business minded, ass-end of the Pano after the break.

LG's 120Hz LCDs now with 52-inches of wood

In that overly-dramatized photo above, LG is touting the wonders of their newest 120Hz LCDs coupled with their latest take on the wooden bezel. The new XCANVAS models share the stylings of their previous wood sets and ship in Korea with 42- (42LY4D), 47- (47LY4D), and 52-inch (52LY4D) panel options. Other than a 178-degree viewing angle, latest XD processing engine, and a USB-host jack for a quick audio or image fix, the machine translated details are notably scant. Fine by us, we're not feeling the whole natural TV thing anyway.

Fully automated restaurant opens in Germany

Hate interacting with humans? Well then we've got the restaurant for you, located in Nuremberg, Germany. The restaurant, called Bagger's, eschews waiters and waitresses for gravity operated ramps that sends food directly to tables. Customers order on touch screens, swipe their cards on built in readers, and wait for their food with a read-out that shows when the food is expected to be delivered. So, get ready to yell at your ordinateur when your fries are late. "Garcon!" ain't gonna cut it in this restaurant.

Full-scale Iron Scopedog woos women while invading Japan

You wouldn't think that a 13-foot / 2 ton, cast iron Scopedog mecha would require the services of a knee-pad wearin' festival waif, but there you have it. Built by Kogoro Kurata -- the celebrity blacksmith behind the Steampunk laptop -- this 1:1 scale robot was locked and ready for action at Japan's Character and Hobby Collection 2007 show held over the weekend. Seriously though, how tough could the mech be if he's held at bay by some chinsey chain-link?

googlephone.jpgA popular Indian newspaper is reporting that the much awaited GPhone is only a fortnight away from a global launch and the search engine major has already started talks with service providers in India for an exclusive launch on one of their networks. A simultaneous launch across the US and Europe is expected, and announcements would be sent to media firms in India and other parts of the world. The paper reports Google plans to invest a staggering $7-8 billion for its global telephony foray. In India, it is also believed to be in talks with providers to offer data and content and platforms including Instant Messaging (IM) and Search functions. Google is reported to be in talks with Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Essar and state owned BSNL which are one of the biggest cellular operators in the country. Reports of Google developing a phone have been doing rounds on the Internet since quite some time. But as always Google has refused to comment on speculation and rumours. If at all these rumours were to be true then the Google phone will be an entry level phone probably in the $100 - $200 range as only then it will be appealing to India's masses. Contrary to the rumours none of these carriers have plans which include cell phones like in the US. Related - Google Phone to ship by year end - HTC

[Bionic Woman]

Analyst says Nintendo fed Wii-starved US with Japanese stock

Despite the launch of the Wii in the US occurring months and months ago, there is still a perceivable shortage of the little white console. Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter made his own analysis of the recent upturn in US Wii console sales by predicting that Nintendo filled the gap by diverting manufacturing in Japan to feed the US stores. It's almost beyond belief that Nintendo still hasn't been able to get a grasp on its manufacturing process, over nine months since the Wii was released. Wasn't half the point of focusing on casual gaming -- and therefore lower specs -- that the console would be easy to manufacture in vast quantities?

Microsoft's WGA servers down, everyone's a pirate today

Hope you weren't planning on installing "your" legally purchased copy of XP or Vista today, Microsoft's Windows Genuine Advantage servers are down at the moment, meaning your Vista install will go into "reduced functionality mode" when you fail to check in with Big Brother, and your XP install will just be generally cranky until you can give that license information to The Man. Microsoft's tech support seems to be vaguely aware of the issue, and recommends trying again on Tuesday the 28th, since the server "might be down for a few days." Oh, is that all?

Update: Looks like they've fixed it. Thanks for the heads up, Marius.

SanDisk decided to bring another screen to the clip-on party with its new Sansa Clip. Apple's Shuffle and Creative's Zen Stone have been rocking the form factor for a while now, but only the Zen Stone Plus is much use for browsing through your music collection. The Sansa Clip player sports the same OLED screen that can be found on the Sansa Express, but comes in both 1GB and 2GB flavors, for the lovable price points of $40 and $60, respectively. SanDisk even found room for FM and voice recorders, and the usual MP3 and subscription-friendly WMA support. The Sansa Clip promises 15 hours of battery life, and should be out in September in your choice of black, red, pink and blue.
